Video footage has emerged of a Syrian rebel commander with a knife in hand who sliced parts of a dead soldier's torso before turning to the camera and putting the heart in his mouth, in what experts say is an isolated but worrying case.

"I swear we will eat from your hearts and livers…," the man says referring to the Syria government soldiers.

Peter Bouckaert of the New York-based Human Rights Watch says the man has been identified as Abu Sakkar, a founder of the militant Farouq Brigade. Abu Sakkar's identity has been confirmed by militant sources in Homs.

The rebel commander cuts out the corpse’s liver and heart, and poses in front of the camera holding the organs in his hands, cheered by the shouting "Allah akbar (God is great)" in the background.

At the end of the video the man is filmed putting the corpse’s heart into his mouth, as if taking a bite out of it.

The footage has sparked outrage among both the opposition and supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Eliot Higgins, creator of the Brown Moses blog that documents many of videos coming out of the Syrian war each week, told a British newspaper that this was the first video of apparent cannibalism he had seen.

“What’s pretty unique about this video is it’s possible to identify the person in the video, when generally you find with any video of claimed war crimes and atrocities that’s next to impossible,” he said.

“In the past, opposition groups have posted videos of executions they’ve performed, which they believe have been justified – in particular jihadist groups,” Higgins said.

Both sides of the civil war have frequently disseminated videos that appear to show crimes by the other side, but it is also becoming common for rebel groups to show their own supposed victories, Higgins added.

The Homs province, which borders Lebanon, has seen fierce fighting over the last year, with Hezbollah fighters crossing over into Syria to support the army in Qusair, and, more recently, rebel attacks targeting villages across the border.
