digital video
Video recording in digital form. In order to edit video in the computer or to embed video clips into multimedia documents, a video source must originate from a digital camera or be converted to digital. Frames from analog video cameras and VCRs are converted into digital frames (bitmaps) using frame grabbers or similar devices attached to a computer.
Uncompressed digital video signals require huge amounts of storage, and high-ratio real-time compression schemes, such as MPEG, are essential for handling digital video in today's computers
analog video
The original video recording method that stores continuous waves of red, green and blue intensities. In analog video, the number of rows is fixed. There are no real columns, and the maximum detail is determined by the frequency response of the analog system.
VHS and Basic Cable
The term is often used to refer to VHS videotapes, non-digital broadcast TV and non-digital cable TV, the latter typically being the basic service offering of the cable companies. Contrast with digital video. See analog camera, raster and video formats.
