Being at the center of the Field Isolation Center, FIC, for COVID patients in Karachi reminds AKU alumnus Dr Salman Khalil of his time as a midfielder in the University’s football team.
Salman, MBBS ’18, is at the centre of the FIC’s operations and is playing a key role in running the patient care area, or red zone, and the green zone that houses key logistical functions. Just like a midfielder must manage attacking and defensive duties, Salman has to balance twin responsibilities at the FIC.
On the one hand, he is the assistant head of the red zone. His role sees him organise and maintain the staff’s crucial defences against the virus such as personal protective equipment and medicines.
His other responsibility as accommodation and transport manager involves providing support to staff on the frontlines who are leading the ‘attack’ or fight against the disease. This role requires him to survey the overall needs of the 24-hour facility that has over 200 staff and is equipped to handle up to 1,200 coronavirus patients.
Similar to a midfielder who needs to keep the big picture or ‘bird’s eye view of the pitch’ in mind, Salman also had to be ready to step in to solve the immediate challenges that appear on the field.
Besides maintaining the day-to-day inventory of essential supplies for patients and healthcare workers, he also ensures that the FIC has sufficient staff by managing transport schedules and accommodation facilities in the FIC’s ‘container city’*.
Explaining the links between his job and his hobby, Salman said: “In football, you constantly need to keep yourself in check so that you can meet the team’s needs. You must also be able to cover up teammate’s errors and to know how to pass on duties and accept help from others when you make mistakes.”
Salman is grateful to his ‘coaches’ at the FIC: AKU faculty Dr Nuzhat Faruqi, Dr Muneer Amanullah and Dr Waris Ahmed who continue to guide him in his responsibilities.

The FIC’s accommodation facilities enable healthcare workers to stay on premises. This prevents their families from being exposed to the virus.
