Urdu awards event set for May 15Published: Sunday, 11 May, 2008, 01:26 AM Doha Time
THE annual Aalmi Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Awards ceremony and the Aalmi Mushaira (International poetry symposium) will be held at the Doha Sheraton on May 15.
“More than 20 Urdu poets, writers and scholars from Pakistan and India will arrive in Doha in the next few days to take part in the grand annual event,” Mohamed Atiq, chairman, board of patrons, Majlis Frogh-e-Urdu Adab, said.
Mohamed Mansha Yad from Pakistan and Prof. Varis Alvi from India will receive the top awards at the ceremony. The awards were instituted by the Majlis, a literary society, in 1996, to honour Urdu writers and scholars for their lifetime achievements, and thereby to promote the Urdu language. It carries a cash prize of Rs300,000 which will be shared equally by the two winners, and a gold trophy for each.
The grand mushaira will be presided over by the renowned poet Ahmed Faraz from Pakistan.
The guest poets from India include Nida Fazli, Sardar Panchi, Naeem Akhter Burhanpuri, Hafiz Abdul Mannan, Popular Meeruti, Shayama Singh Saba and Mohamed Alvi.
From Pakistan, the guest poets are Mohamed Anwer Masood, Mohamed Aslam Kaulsary, Azm Behzad, Mohamed Saleem Kouser, Liaqat Ali Asim, Rehana Roohi and Firtash Syed.
Two poets - Dr Zohra Serwat and Zahoor ul-Islam Javed - have also been invited from the UAE.
Other guests include Dr Mohamed Ali Siddiqui from Pakistan and Salahuddin from the UAE. The Majlis will also release a souvenir on the occasion.
Last year, the society organised the Aalmi Mushaira in memory of its founder, Malik Museeb ur-Rehman, who died in April 2006.
Those interested to get free invitation cards to the event may contact Shaukat Ali Naz (5559583) or Javed Humayun (5391557). Passes can also be obtained from the Shezan Hotel reception from tomorrow (4865225).
